Saifur Rahman, President and CEO of IEEE and Director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Virginia Tech, Visited BJTU

On the afternoon of September 27, 2023, Vice President YAN Xuedong met with Saifur Rahman, President and CEO of IEEE and Director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Virginia Tech, and HUA Ning, Senior Director of IEEE Asia Pacific.

YAN Xuedong welcomed the visit of Saifur Rahman and his delegation, and gave a brief introduction to BJTU's history, discipline construction, talent training and contribution to the national rail transit industry.  He thanked IEEE for its long-term support in co-organizing international academic conferences, supporting BJTU’s IEEE fellows and members to participate in various activities, and sharing research results, and hoped that in the future, the two sides could continue to strengthen academic exchanges and talent training in the fields of electric power and renewable energy.

Saifur Rahman spoke highly of the long-term exchanges and cooperation between BJTU and IEEE, especially IEEE PES, in various fields, and gave a detailed introduction to the development of IEEE, noting that IEEE will continue to support BJTU’s teachers and students to participate in IEEE activities, promote personnel exchanges, and enhance cooperation in jointly holding international conferences in the future.

Following the meeting, Saifur Rahman and his delegation also visited the BJTU’s history museum and gave an academic report on the "Design, Development and Application of Smart Grid" for the teachers and students of the School of Electrical Engineering of BJTU.

The meeting was also attended by the responsible personnel of the School of Electrical Engineering, the Office of Human Resources, and the Office of International Affairs.

Professor Saifur Rahman currently serves as President and CEO of IEEE and Director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Virginia Tech. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1973 and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Arlington State University in 1978. In addition, he is also a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the Center for Energy and Global Environment at Virginia Tech. He has published a number of papers in the research areas of smart grid, conventional and renewable energy systems, load forecasting, uncertainty assessment, infrastructure planning, and IoT device integration, etc. In 2018 and 2019, he served as President of the IEEE Power & Energy Society, Vice Chairman of the IEEE Publications Committee, and member of the IEEE Board of Directors.
