Word of the Week--- The Horse-Head Statue

【词义解释】

为庆祝澳门回归20周年，澳门企业家何鸿燊决定将圆明园十二铜兽首（12 bronze animal-head statues）之一的马首（horse-head statue）捐赠给国家。（Macao-based tycoon and collector Stanley Ho Hung-sun decided to donate the horse-head statue back to the mainland on 20th anniversary of Macao's return to China.）11月13日，他的家人代表将马首捐献给国家文物局（National Cultural Heritage Administration），文物局受捐后将圆明园马首铜像划拨北京市圆明园管理处收藏。马首是第一尊回归圆明园原址的兽首铜像。

【背景资料】

海外流失文物牵动人心，近年来不少国宝以不同形式回归祖国。圆明园兽首铜像原为圆明园海晏堂外喷泉的一部分。马首材质为精炼红铜，色彩深沉厚重，历数百年风雨而不锈蚀。

十二尊生肖兽首铜像（the bronze statues in the form of 12 Chinese Zodiac Signs）铸造于乾隆年间，由当时的宫廷西洋画师意大利人郎世宁主持设计，宫廷匠师制作。兽首铜像铸造完成后，呈“八”字形分列在喷水池两旁的人身石台上，每个动物就是一个喷泉机关（fountain switch）。
    每天，十二生肖兽首铜像依次喷水，分别代表全日不同时分。正午时分，十二兽首会同时喷水。These animal-head taps took turns to spray water during different hours within a day, at noon, a salvo would happen.

1860年英法联军侵入北京，圆明园惨遭劫掠焚毁，很多国宝级文物及12生肖兽首铜像一同流失海外。
