5月15日，国家主席习近平在北京国家会议中心出席亚洲文明对话大会开幕式，并发表题为《深化文明交流互鉴共建亚洲命运共同体》（Deepening Exchanges and Mutual Learning Among Civilizations For an Asian Community with a Shared Future）的主旨演讲（Keynote speech），指出璀璨的亚洲文明为世界文明发展史书写了浓墨重彩的篇章。

在演讲中，他提出文明交流互鉴的4点主张：坚持相互尊重、平等相待（to respect each other and treat each other as equals）；坚持美人之美、美美与共（to uphold the beauty of each civilization and the diversity of civilizations in the world）；坚持开放包容、互学互鉴（to stay open and inclusive and draw on each other's strengths）；坚持与时俱进、创新发展（to advance with the times and explore new ground in development）。
